Live Illustration & Creative Experiences

Anything you could photograph, I can reimagine through reportage illustration.

I create on-location reportage illustrations of performances, events, places and experiences - from ballet and theatre to luxury brand activations, hotel openings, design fairs and seasonal campaigns. The resulting artwork can become bespoke assets for physical and digital marketing, editorial, publishing, social content and licensing.

I also create drawing workshops and live participatory experiences that invite VIP guests to become part of the creative process.

Royal Ballet & Opera

Live Performance Illustration

I documented a Royal Ballet performance through live on-location reportage illustration, capturing the movement, atmosphere and details of the performance from the audience.

The project was also developed into a behind-the-scenes short video showing the process - which led to interest from global opera houses.

This is a perfect example of when traditional reportage illustration can be used in a location where photography isn’t permitted - bringing a global audience into an event they couldn’t photograph themselves.

CASS ART x CARAN D’ACHE

Travel Postcard Drawing Workshop

To celebrate the opening week of the new Cass Art at King’s Cross (London) this September, I was invited to host a workshop. The theme was based on my recent book launch with Penguin Random House ‘The Traveling Sketcher: City’ - focussing on learning how to draw your travel memories.

During the workshop I taught the students how to create their own travel postcards, based off a reference I took of the local King’s Cross location. Every participant was then given a stamped envelope, so they could write a message on the back of the postcard and mail it to a loved one.

My Cass Art workshop sold-out quickly with a group of 16 lovely students. The event was sponsored by Caran d’Ache.

In a world full of AI and digital saturation, hand-drawn creativity is becoming ever-more precious. The act of spending time creating a personalised postcard and letter that captures your memories, I believe is such a powerful and meaningful way to show how much you care about someone.

Throughout the workshop we focussed on tonal values, only using three colours and exploring how to view a scene in black and white. This is a very important fundamental of illustration and drawing on-location, whilst also making the workshop accessible for all levels.

My workshops don’t just teach the illustration fundamentals, but I create an encouraging environment to inspire participants beyond the studio. They teach you: how to be confident in following your intuition; to embrace mistakes; slow down and deeply observe; view life with a new perspective; problem solving skills and how to connect with others through a universal language. Most importantly, the act of drawing is meant to bring happiness and is there to be enjoyed.

Your Questions Answered

What level are your workshops for?

1

I create workshops tailored to any drawing level, whether you are picking up a pencil for the first time or you want to dive deeper into advanced illustration techniques. My focus is on creating a relaxed environment that encourages play, problem solving, confidence and most importantly shares how enjoyable the creative process is.

I also have workshop formats tailored for all ages, from primary school children up to grandparents. Creativity is meant to be accessible for everyone.

Can you do custom workshops?

2

Yes, I can either come with one of my core drawing workshops or I am happy to tailor it to your specific event, brand or location. Whether that is creating a drawing inspired by the architecture of the building, local area, season or product you are releasing - I love exploring new formats to connect with tailored audiences.

Do you run online & in-person workshops?

3

Due to my global audience, the majority of my workshops over the last few years have been online, catering to different time zones, with the aim to inspire as many people as possible to get creative. Though my preference for a workshop format is always in-person, as I find it allows for greater interactivity and builds a stronger community.

What events are suited to live illustration?

4

Live illustration has been used as a documentation format for many centuries. It is a flexible process and can be tailored to a variety of different events and locations, from ballet and theatre performances, to music concerts, brand events, heritage locations, or luxury hotel openings and renovations.

Live illustration can also be used as a guest experience in hotels, allowing guests to become involved in the creative process and watch the illustration come together. I also frequently draw in locations where photography is not permitted - with reportage illustration being a perfect alternative.

Can you do personalised illustrations at events?

5

Absolutely, as well as illustrating the event and venue itself, I can also create small bespoke drawings for guests as a keepsake to take home. I also do painting for product personalisation, whether this is on packaging, travel items, bags etc.
